Shepherd’s midday alert saves dozens in GB’s Ghizar flood
Wasayat Khan, stranded with his livestock after warning residents, hailed a hero by police
Gilgit-Baltistan police appreciated the bravery of a shepherd whose timely midday warning saved dozens of lives during the floods.
The shepherd, Wasayat Khan, a resident of Roshan, Gupis, alerted all the villagers through a phone call at 2:50 p.m. about the Glacial Lake outburst flood that hit the Ghizar area, after which all villagers moved to safe places.
After a few minutes, a great flood swept away houses and fields with it. However, the phone call from Wasayat Khan saved the lives of many people.

Wasayat Khan is himself stuck in pasture with his livestock, and his many animals are swept away by the floods. Authorities have commended him for his bravery and referred to him as a hero.
Authorities have also alerted the people living in the lower areas of the River Ghizer about the potential risk of further floods.
The climate change induced-floods has devastated the northern regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan.
According to the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa PDMA, around 500 people lost their lives in Malakand and Hazara division areas, Buner, Shangla, Swabi, Bajaur, Swat and other areas in the recent cloudburst floods.
